Putting On The Top

As you can see, I basically take random boards and see where they fit the best.  Some of the hardest things are the curvature of the front end and getting that band around the edges.

You can see some of the boards have the old grout lines from the previous boat. I try to incorporate them into the bar as much as possible.

Initially, what I do is temporarily fasten the boards down. I take them back off later and plane them to try to get them more uniform and even.

Now I’m working down one side.  The scary part is I’m getting really low on wood.  I’m sure I don’t have enough to do this entire boat, but I keep going and somehow it always works out.

Laying out the boards on the band and the interior. I just basically fasten them, then cut them to fit and then plane the edges smooth after the fact. After I get this all filled with boards, I’ll come back and counter sink probably twice as many screws to make sure this boat top stays secure over the years.

It’s made to sit out in the elements and withstand winter weather, rain and whatever Mother Nature throws at it.

  1. Dear Jack. I’m following the progress of your boat bar and you do amazing work. I’m currently in the process of getting a boat bar going as well. Hope to learn a lot from you. Thanks Jack Santoro, Connecticut

Thanks for your comments. It’s a lot of trail and error. There’s a lot of measuring and thinking to make it look right. I will send you my cell number so you can call me with any questions.
    Thanks Jack
