Smooth as Silk

After all the plugs have been installed, I cut them off with a chisel as close as I can to the top.  This will reduce the amount of sanding that will have to be done.

I have now given it a light sanding.  Before I go any further, I have stopped to grout the top seams to make it one solid piece.

The front and back will both get white grout joints before the last coat of varnish.  I have found it best to fill them in now and work with a nice smooth top.

Now that’s what I’m looking for.  After two days of sanding and twenty sanding discs, it’s really starting to take shape.

I have stopped to fill in all the little imperfections.  After this dries over night, I will start sanding it back out.  Keep in mind, this is just not one step and done.  I start out with 80 grit sand paper and work my way down to 220.  So, all together, this will be three or four steps.

The worst part is the saw dust is everywhere.  I will have to take one day just to clean before I even stain the top.
