Topping It Off

Here’s the first coat of stain on the top.  It looks a little blotchy, but time will tell.  I need to let it dry all the way and then I’ll come back and color match it to even it out.

You can tell it’s still pretty wet when you see the plugs more visible than usual.  They really stand out when they’re still wet.

After I get the stain color matched nicely and it’s dry, I’ll put a coat of varnish on it.  Then I’ll come back and grout all the joints.  I fill them evenly and then paint them white later.  I want it to be a nice, even and smooth surface.

Taking a little break before I start on the side…it’s a lot of work.  This stain is really different.  It’s a filler stain and it’s kind of thick.  It fills in all the little imperfections, which helps out in the long run because it saves me a lot of sanding and puttying.

The top is dry now.  I only need to color match a little bit…that’s not bad.  Saves me a lot of time.  This is just beautiful wood.  Look at that grain.  They sure don’t grow them like they used to.

I’m really loving that.  Just look at that wood.  A lot of people call it ribbon wood.  There’s a lot of different nicknames, but it’s just beautiful; no doubt about it.

Now time to color match.
